Being Sensible and Wise

           We strive to make sensible and wise decisions.  In Titus chapters one and two, the writer instructs the elders, older men, older women, younger women, and younger men to be sensible.  To be sensible is among the many examples of character listed for the Christian walk.  Anyone can strive to have the character traits named in Titus, but to be truly sensible and wise comes from God.
           In Exodus 28:3 God says to Moses, “You shall speak to all the skilled persons whom I have endowed with the spirit of wisdom.” (NAS)  God gives the ‘spirit of wisdom.’  We are reminded again in James 1:5 and 6 that “if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  But he must ask in faith without doubting.”  So, if we want to make sensible and wise decisions, we go to God and faithfully trust him to give us the wisdom to make sensible and wise decisions.
          In I Kings 3:5-9 God comes to Solomon in a dream, “Ask what you wish me to give you.”  It did not take Solomon long to reply, “So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil.”  God did more than give Solomon wisdom; he blessed him with riches and greatness.  “For God gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sands that is on the seashore.” (I Kings 4:29 NAS)  Later in life, Solomon turned from God and God turned from Solomon.
          This is the same for us.  If we lack faith or turn to our own ways, God will not give us the understanding and discernment we desire.  Yes, we can make sensible and wise decisions according to the ways of man and the world, but without God’s wisdom, we fail spiritually, mentally, and physically.  It is only with faith in God where we can have understanding to discern between good and evil.  It is with God’s love in us where we can understand the needs of others and make wise decisions to reach out and help.  With an understanding of God’s will, we have peace in our hearts and souls with each decision.  So, dear friend, turn from your own ways of sensibility and turn to God each day faithfully seeking God’s way of sensible and wise.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.”

Psalms 111:10 (NAS)
