A Closed Door
Sunbeams are illuminating
Through the stain glassed windows
Giving wondrous, Devine beauty
For the Members to behold.
The royal blue and burgundy
Fills the sanctuary with majesty
As the Members sing proudly,
Holy, Holy, Holy, Our God Almighty.
The customary rituals of worship
Transpire for each somber Member
All dressed in their best
On this beautiful day,
And dressed in their best
To impress or out dress.
The preacher preaches eloquently,
As to a great Heavenly Host.
This place, called a sanctuary,
Holds Member of different hearts.
Mr. Terrier dominating the front
With a mind for control.
Mr. and Mrs. Thrash glaring
With pride and gloating victory.
Mrs. Wings' appearance on this day
Is for desire of more news.
Humbly and Praying sits Mr. Green
With a regretful heart of sadness
And disappointment for this scene.
He is praying for God to bless.
God's Blessing and Freedom to worship
Were the humble desires of their fathers,
Who lovingly built this place of worship
For the worship of the Heavenly Father.
They toiled and labored with calloused hands
Building a church with an open door.
Building as more enter from all lands.
Giving freedom to worship behind the open door.
As the service draws to an end,
Mrs. Mottes awakens her mate
With her sharp, plump elbow.
Mr. Mottes awakens with eyes asking,
"Did I miss the judgement?"
Mrs. Mottes smiles with a sneer,
As they remain in their usual seats
On the pew by the back door.
The pastor looks at the deacons,
As he sits on his royal throne.
The holy service is complete:
Now, it is time for the judgement.
The chairman moves to the pulpit
To announce the deacon's verdict
Of the young one gone astray
From pure innocence and trust.
Michael was sent to the Members
Full of innocence and trust
From the bush of the dark continent
Where his parents heal the bodies
And the souls of the lost.
His parents trust the Terriers
Along with the blessed Thrashes
To direct and love their dear son.
Members give great support
Of money to the good missionary,
Who labors with love in the bush.
Members take pride in their support
To the humble and faithful missionary
Doing God's work for them in the bush.
Members open their fat purses
To show all, they are doing their part.
Members take pride in material gain,
Teaching their children the way
To accumulate vast riches,
So they can have the best
And the most popular materials
The World has to offer.
Forgetting to give and teach
The importance of love and the Truth.
Being near the old university
On business one bright day,
Mr. Thrash decides to pay a visit
To Michael, if he is home.
Michael is in his room
Along with a young lady.
Now, this does not look good
And seems to be a way of escape.
Mrs. Thrash informs Mrs. Terrier
With the news of the visit.
Oh! Young Michael had a lady
Studying in his room!
Oh! a young man with a lady
In his room at the university.
Mrs. Terrier informs Mrs. Wings
And the story of immorality flies.
The chairman of the deacons
Looks over heads to proudly view
The beauty of the sanctuary.
Clearing his throat to announce,
"Young Michael is living in sin,
So we must do the right thing."
No need to support young Michael,
Since the Members must cut him off.
As the judgement is declared
Young Bill Terrier smiles with relief.
He will soon get some sleep
To recover from the Wild Turkey.
Joy Thrash stretches and sighs
With thoughts of last nights passion.
And thoughts of getting past the speed
Is the burden of young Pete Motte.
Members sing the doxology,
But not like the Heavenly Host.
Their voices are muffled and low
With no angelic joy.
Mr. Green feels the fingers of pity
For Member in the dark and lost.
Deeds and riches will bring sorrow,
A closed door, and no joy.
(I wrote this in 1971. This have been revised a few times. Last revision in 2005. The names are not names of any specific person, but used to depict the character. As a young Christian, I saw hypocrisy in the church. Instead of taking care of their families, many were quick to judge others. For me, I wondered where was the love and the condition of the hearts. Years later, I wonder if this is why so many churches are closing. They left God out. They went to church out of pride for a building built by their fathers and not to worship the God of Heaven who made it all possible.)
