Woman at the Well: The Mission (3)

In John 4, I see three messages in verses one through forty-two.  In the Encounter, we see the importance of taking advantage with every encounter.  Each person is important to God and should be important to us.  Second is Worship where Jesus teaches that God is a Spirit, so we worship in spirit and in truth, and we can worship anywhere at any time.  Finally, we have a Mission.  The mission is to tell others about Jesus and the way to salvation.

When the disciples returned to Jacob’s well with a meal for Jesus, they were more concerned with Jesus eating the food they had brought to him.  Jesus had just had an encounter with a woman with a spiritual need, and he reminded the disciples that he was sent to do the will of God and to finish his work.  In his conversation with the woman at the well, he revealed that he was the Messiah.  She believed and went away to tell the people of Sychar that the Messiah was in town.  They came seeking the Messiah and believed.  Here we have Jesus planting the seeds of truth through the Samaritan woman which led to a greater harvest in Sychar.

Jesus said to the disciples in John 4:35-37, “Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, because they are white already to harvest.  And he that reaps receives wages and gathers fruit unto life eternal; so that both he that sows and he that reaps may rejoice together.  And herein is that saying is true, one soweth and another reaps.”

“Lift up your eyes and look on the fields” is a command to each born again Christian.  When we see that people need the Lord, our mission is to share the gospel.  Praying and supporting missionaries is good, but this is only part of God’s plan for each of us.  There is a harvest all around each of us, and our responsibility is to share God’s love along with the gospel.  Let’s don’t get too involved with everyday needs where we make excuses not tell someone about the way to salvation.  As Jesus convicted the soul of the Samaritan woman which lead to a greater harvest of people who believed in Jesus, the Messiah, we too can sow seeds of salvation so others can gather the fruit of eternal life.  May each of us open our eyes to the harvest and fulfil our mission to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
